Fermented Happiness: The Science of Sourdough & Mental Well-being
Jaisha WallentineShare
Dear Crumbheads,
Did you know your sourdough starter is basically a tiny, edible mental health booster? Science says fermentation helps produce feel-good bacteria, and frankly, I think that’s beautiful.
Mr. Crusty’s 3-Step Guide to a Happier Loaf (and Maybe a Less Burnt-Out Life):
-
Feed what feeds you — and toss what doesn’t.
You can’t keep everything. Not in your starter jar, and definitely not in your life. Some things need to go — even if they were part of your original mix. Feed what’s nourishing you now. Toss what’s taking up space and giving nothing back. That’s not waste. That’s wisdom. -
Slow down — seriously, or your loaf (and your life) will collapse.
Fast bread is flat bread. And fast healing? It’s usually just emotional avoidance in a cuter outfit. Let things ferment. Let them stretch. Pause long enough to notice: are you rising, or just reacting? -
Celebrate the weird.
Starters get bubbly, smelly, unpredictable. So do people. Your emotional funk isn’t a flaw — it’s proof you’re still alive, still transforming. Call it character. Call it fermentation. Just don’t call it a failure.

Mr. Crusty,
P.S. You’re doing better than you think. Also, go feed your starter.
